Know Your Worth! Negotiating Salary and Benefits
In this session, you will learn how to think strategically and to prepare a tactical plan for negotiating effective outcomes in a number of areas of your life, including your salary! You will learn the importance of researching the parties and objectives, to use persuasive communication, and to bargain for the desired outcome. This session will focus on the importance of the emotional and substantive preparation before negotiating, on anticipating and calibrating your interactions for an improved result, and how to handle deviations and various obstacles to reach a successful conclusion. You will also learn the principle of “win-win” negotiations.

The purpose of Job Club is to provide a positive environment for motivated job seekers to meet, connect, share and learn. The free group is open to the public and meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. Job Club is for you if you are a motivated professional and currently out of work, underemployed or looking to make a career transition.

Shelly is an HR and career development professional who has spent her life guiding others toward lifelong learning, career growth, and personal enrichment. Shelly’s background includes human resources, college career services, corporate employee career development, and business and industry training. Shelly is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources by the HR Certification Institute, as a SHRM-Senior Certified Professional, and also obtained her master’s degree in public administration with an emphasis in HR. She completed her Ph.D. coursework at the University of Louisville in human resources development and career counseling. She is an adjunct faculty member in the School of Business at Indiana University’s Southeast campus, where she teaches business students about career planning, business behaviors, and job search.
